Émilie Payeur is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans installation, sound, performance, video, drawing, sculpture, and composition. Working with found objects, natural materials, clay, modeling paste, and reclaimed materials, she embraces a lo-fi, DIY aesthetic in which bricolage becomes as much a way of thinking as a way of making.

Rather than representing ideas, her practice creates the conditions for experience to emerge. She develops artistic frameworks that orient attention rather than communicate a fixed message, inviting viewers to inhabit the world differently. Her work explores subtle shifts in perception: when a familiar sound becomes uncanny, an object seems to acquire a presence, or an ordinary place suddenly reveals an unexpected depth. She is drawn to those almost imperceptible moments when the everyday quietly ceases to be entirely ordinary.

Inspired by dreams, ritual, the unconscious, animism, and liminal states of perception, she approaches the artwork as a potential space where multiple realities can temporarily coexist. Rather than leading toward a single interpretation, her works open territories of exploration. Here, the sacred is understood less as a matter of belief than as a quality of presence that can emerge when perception begins to shift.

This approach also informs her experimental and noise music practice. Through no-input systems, voice, sampling, and small lo-fi synthesizers, she creates open systems in which unpredictable phenomena can emerge and evolve. Her graphic scores and compositions for other performers extend this research by proposing frameworks that guide experience without determining its outcome.

By questioning the separation between the artwork and those who encounter it, Émilie Payeur understands art as a space of hospitality for the unknown. Her works are less objects to be contemplated than environments to be traversed, inviting participants to slow down, wander, play, and experience other ways of perceiving.

Émilie Payeur est une artiste interdisciplinaire dont la pratique se déploie à travers l’installation, le son, la performance, la vidéo, le dessin, la sculpture et la composition. Elle travaille avec des objets trouvés, des éléments naturels, l’argile, la pâte à modeler et divers matériaux récupérés, dans une esthétique lo-fi et DIY où le bricolage devient autant une manière de penser qu’une manière de faire.

Sa démarche cherche moins à représenter une idée qu’à créer les conditions d’une expérience. Elle conçoit des dispositifs qui orientent l’attention plutôt que de transmettre un message, invitant chacun à habiter le monde autrement. Son travail s’intéresse à ces moments où notre rapport au réel se décale subtilement : lorsqu’un son familier devient étrange, qu’un objet semble acquérir une présence ou qu’un lieu quotidien révèle soudain une profondeur insoupçonnée. Elle explore ces déplacements presque imperceptibles où l’ordinaire cesse d’être tout à fait ordinaire.

À travers le no-input, la voix, les échantillons et de petits synthétiseurs lo-fi, elle met en place des systèmes ouverts où des phénomènes imprévisibles peuvent émerger et évoluer. Ses partitions graphiques et ses compositions destinées à être interprétées par d’autres prolongent cette recherche en proposant des cadres qui orientent l’expérience sans en déterminer l’issue.

En remettant en question la séparation entre l’œuvre et ceux qui la rencontrent, Émilie Payeur conçoit l’art comme un lieu d’hospitalité pour l’inconnu. Ses œuvres sont moins des objets à contempler que des environnements à traverser, invitant à ralentir, jouer, dériver et expérimenter d’autres manières de percevoir.
